Today, we left the hotel in Dakar at 4 AM for a 6 AM departure to Johannesburg, South Africa. The president stayed on in Dakar for a morning meeting with leaders in the agricultural sector. Air Force One was parked on the tarmac at Dakar as we took off.
The entire day was spent in transit.
This time we are staying in the same hotel as the president and his family: the Radisson in Sandton. The
press filing room is set up as it was in Dakar, with rows of tables and chairs, and good AT&T wireless.
I am excited that tomorrow students from the Student Sponsorship Programme of South Africa (SSP) will participate in President Obama’s Town Hall for Young African Leaders. SSP is the scholarship program I founded to open the doors of South Africa’s previously all-white, top private schools for smart, poor African students.
The president and his family snuck into the hotel quietly and without any fanfare.
A quiet night for us all.
